Traveling solo as a woman can be an exhilarating experience, offering a sense of freedom and empowerment. However, packing efficiently requires a balance between bringing essentials and keeping your luggage manageable. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you pack smart and travel light.
1. Start with the Right Luggage
- Carry-on Suitcase: Opt for a lightweight, durable carry-on suitcase. Look for one with multi-directional wheels for easy maneuverability.
- Daypack/Backpack: A small backpack is essential for day trips and carrying personal items on flights.
2. Plan Your Outfits
- Versatile Clothing: Choose pieces that can be mixed and matched. Think neutral colors and simple patterns (capsule wardrobe).
- Layering: Pack lightweight layers. A cardigan, scarf, and a light jacket can go a long way.
- Multi-functional Items: Consider items like a sarong that can be used as a scarf, blanket, or beach cover-up.
- Comfortable Shoes: Bring a pair of walking shoes, sandals, and perhaps a dressy pair if needed.
3. Essentials
- Travel Documents: Passport, visa (if needed), travel insurance, and copies of all important documents.
- Money and Cards: Bring a combination of cash and credit cards. A money belt can keep your valuables safe.
- Toiletries: Travel-sized toiletries, reusable travel bottles, and a small bag for easy access. Don’t forget sunscreen and any personal medication.
4. Tech and Gadgets
- Phone and Charger: A phone with international roaming or a local SIM card. Portable charger for backup power.
- Camera: If you enjoy photography, a small camera or a smartphone with a good camera will suffice.
- Adapters and Converters: Research the electrical outlets in your destination and pack the appropriate adapters.
5. Safety and Comfort
- Personal Safety Items: Consider a whistle, personal alarm, or pepper spray if it makes you feel safer.
- First Aid Kit: Include basic items like band-aids, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any prescription medications.
- Reusable Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial, and many places have refill stations.
6. Packing Techniques
- Roll Your Clothes: Rolling clothes instead of folding saves space and reduces wrinkles.
- Packing Cubes: Use packing cubes to keep your items organized and compress your clothing.
- Wear Bulky Items: Wear your heaviest clothes and shoes on travel days to save space in your suitcase.
Packing efficiently for a solo trip is all about preparation and making smart choices. By following these tips, you’ll be ready for an adventure without the hassle of overpacking. Safe travels!

My First Trip to Paris
During the 2022 spring break, I flew across the Atlantic to visit my sister in England. The last few days of my holiday, I decided that I wanted to go to Paris. I mean, I was RIGHT THERE! So I hopped on a plane and landed, for the first time ever, in the city that I've dreamt about for over 3 decades.
I arrived in the afternoon and the weather was perfect. It was a lovely spring day...the sun was shining and the sky was clear and blue. It was perfect! My Uber driver picked me up from the airport and took me to my flat. He was so kind and helpful. In fact, we are now friends! I've met his family and chat with him every so often through WhatsApp...moving on...the Airbnb was in the heart of Montmartre and was a stunning reno in a very typically Parisian building. My flat was on the 2nd floor (3rd floor - American) and was parfait for my very first experience in this magical city.
Just around the corner of my flat, was a bustling, picture perfect, Parisian street. Filled with boulangeries, patisseries, boucheries, and every other ~rie~ you can think of. Walking down the cobblestone streets, listening to everyone speaking French, taking in all the sights, sounds and smells of Paris, I thought I had died and gone to Francophile heaven!
I spent a mere 36 hours in Paris before leaving to fly back to England, then back home. It was a dream to be able to do this and it lit a fire in me to travel more and experience life in my favorite city.
I will always remember how I felt when I arrived in Paris; like it was home.
